Optical Coherence Tomography

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses light to produce high-resolution, cross-sectional images of the retina. Using OCT, our eye doctor can detect early warning signs of a range of eye diseases and other issues even before you have symptoms.

The OCT scan creates incredibly detailed images of the retina’s layers, allowing our doctor to track changes in your eyes’ internal structures over time. During the test, you will sit in front of the OCT machine and rest your head on a support to keep it still. Nothing touches the eye at any time, and the test only takes about 5–10 minutes to complete.

How are optical coherence tomography scans used?

Our doctor uses OCT scans to diagnose a variety of eye diseases and conditions, including:

  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Age-related macular degeneration
  • Macular edema
  • Glaucoma
  • Retinal detachment, occlusions, or bleeding
  • Macular holes
  • Neovascularization

OCT scans are ideal for people who want to learn more about their eye health or anyone with glaucoma, diabetes, or a family history of eye diseases. Even if your eye health and vision are fine, we still recommend getting regular OCT scans to be safe.
